Therapy Tips for Daily Growth:

Peace of Mind

Tip #1. Try this 3-step diaphragmatic breathing exercise:

  1. Put your hand on your stomach.

  2. Inhale slowly through your nose.

  3. Pause, then exhale out through the top lip of your mouth.

Repeat for approximately 5-10 minutes timed.

Why it works: This is a science-backed technique that switches on your body’s natural relaxation response (often called the “rest and digest” mode), helping both body and mind finally relax and be present.

Empowerment

Tip #2: Locus of Control

  1. Take a step back and assess where you are spending your time in a day (work, self care, family, etc.)

  2. Keep a journal and write down where you are spending your time and rate each activity from 1-10 of how much enjoyment it gives you. (eg. 10 hours of work=3; 1 hour with family=10; 0 hours of exercise=10).

  3. Start to look for areas and opportunities where you can change spending more time on what gives you the most enjoyment and sense of control.

  4. Take action to increase the things you identified.

Why it works: Science shows that people who believe they can control the quality of their lives tend to be happier and healthier. That is because they make responsible and healthier choices and focus on what they can control. In contrast, others who believe that successful outcomes in life are external and random feel more helpless and less motivated to make change.

Enhance the Quality of Your Relationships

As human beings, by nature we are social beings. Studies show that the quality of our life is based on the quality of our relationships. At Angel G. Psychotherapy, you will develop skills to improve communication, understand others, express your emotions effectively, problem solve, and to deepen your connection with others. The quality of your life will improve because you will increase enjoyment from your interactions with others and strengthen your support system.

Tip #3: Improve relationships by using active listening. When listening, repeat back to people what you heard in your own words. Dont just listen to the words, listen for the emotion underneath the words. When people experience being heard, they will be left with a positive experience.

Managing Your Emotions

Therapist for emotional support or to help manage emotions

Consider that emotions are not bad and you are not wrong for feeling them. Although, they do feel bad at times. For survival, our bodies are designed to have emotions and they have a purpose. For example, the fight, flight or freeze response from our brain helps to keep us alive from threats or perceived threats. At Angel G. Psychotherapy, you will have opportunities to safely explore your emotions. You will be guided to experience your feelings as tools instead of barriers. You will learn how to develop a relationship with your emotions. You will find that they serve a purpose to motivate you and communicate to yourself and others.

Tip #4: Practice feeling your emotions daily, especially the uncomfortable ones. Be still, scan your body, and notice where you feel it in your body. Emotions last approximately 90 seconds if no other stimuli is present. When you strengthen tolerating unwanted feelings, in turn you will enhance feeling the pleasant ones, like happiness.
